Effective Edge Case Testing for Autonomous Vehicle Validation

Validating autonomous vehicles requires more than just massive accumulation of miles. While simulations can help, even that approach leaves many unresolved problems, including the critical issue of what scenarios to simulate. Additional approaches that can help validate safety include: using a layered approach to simulation to leverage fidelity vs. execution cost tradeoffs, architecting the system with self-reporting of key scenario information to ensure that tests are passing for the right reasons, and using tools to automatically identify and test for edge cases that might not have been identified in on-road vehicle testing.
